How to Maintain Your Ceramic Coating: A Complete Guide

Ceramic coating is one of the most advanced paint protection technologies available today. When properly applied and maintained, it can protect your vehicle's paint for 2–7+ years.

What is Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle's factory paint, creating a protective layer that is:

  • Hydrophobic — Water beads and rolls off, taking dirt with it
  • UV resistant — Shields paint from sun oxidation and fading
  • Chemical resistant — Protects against bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime
  • Scratch resistant — Adds a layer of protection (though not scratch-proof)
  • High-gloss — Dramatically enhances your paint's clarity and depth

How Often Should You Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car?

We recommend washing every 1–2 weeks. While the hydrophobic properties reduce how much dirt sticks, regular washing prevents contaminants from bonding and potentially etching the coating.

The Two-Bucket Method

Always use the two-bucket wash method:

  1. Bucket 1: Clean soapy water with a pH-neutral car shampoo
  2. Bucket 2: Plain rinse water with a grit guard
  3. Dip your wash mitt in Bucket 1, wash a panel
  4. Rinse the mitt in Bucket 2 before returning to Bucket 1

Products to AVOID on Ceramic Coatings

  • Automatic car washes with abrasive brushes
  • Acidic or alkaline cleaners not rated for coated cars
  • Wax or polymer sealants — completely unnecessary

Annual Inspection & Top-Up

We recommend an annual inspection at Dr Carcare where we:

  1. Test hydrophobic properties
  2. Inspect for decontamination needs
  3. Apply a professional SiO2 top coat
  4. Address any isolated paint issues
